special senior agent and telepath met Henry’s challenging gaze

unflinchingly. I refused the mental fist pump at Victor’s posture, his

own carefully constructed civility as much a dangerous cloak as

Henry’s genteel manners.

“Impossible.” Sydney’s breathy whisper echoed her

brother’s fiercer statement. So Bris didn’t know Henry could do this

either. “An aberration of nature.”

Energy shivered over my skin, the hairs on the back of my

neck standing erect. The energy coalesced and the earth coiled.

“Sydney.” My spirit lunged within, the new awareness to the

land, the link to Gran, the blending of the bond into my soul,

screamed. “Stop.”

Despite the glare of the sun hovering over the western trees,

I could see the energy swirling around Sydney’s hands. Like a

gathering thunderhead, dark light struck with purple, blue and green

shimmered into being.

“I don’t know what you’re calling, but stop. Now.” The earth

waited. Three truths struck in rapid succession.

The land would protect the vampire, absorbing or reflecting

the danger thrown at him.

Such a reflection could kill Sydney if she released the wealth

of emotion swelling within.

I was nowhere near closely attuned to this new bond to avert

the worst of it.

“He’s a vampire, Chance. You said it yourself, you really

don’t know what they are capable of.” Sydney’s voice dropped an

octave, falling into the well of grief and pain bruising her heart.

“I know.” I motioned Callanport away with a slash of a

hand, edging forward, step-by-step. Mutiny tightened his expression,

but he eased back by inches. Nowhere near far enough to prevent the

backlash Sydney courted.

“I know, Sydney. I know vampires have harmed your family

and you have my word I will help you get the one who is, but your

enemy isn’t Henry.”

Sydney wheeled to face me, wild green eyes gone dark with

the tempest. The earth surged beneath my feet, zinging up through

my bond, I rode the cresting wave, cutting channels with my mind to

bleed off the force.

The energy within me locked sights on Sydney, aware, ready

and waiting.
